The extent to which the development of children's literature in other countries may be dependent on Western modes of thought is discussed by exploring the problems relating to academic research in children's literature as faced by graduate students and scholars in Taiwan. The scholarship is argued to be dominated by Western nations, whose cultural products represent hegemony, by applying perspectives and metaphors from the field of sociology of development.
