Abstract

Abstract

Adult migrant and refugee learners often need rapid gains in spoken English, confidence and workplace communication while balancing settlement pressures, irregular attendance and highly varied (often 'spiky') skill profiles. This article presents a practice-based case study of MyAMES Chat, an AI-powered, mobile-friendly learning tool developed by AMES Australia in partnership with Getmee to extend pronunciation practice, vocabulary building and employability-focused speaking tasks beyond the classroom. The tool was not designed to replace teachers. Instead, it shifts routine feedback and rehearsal tasks to the app, allowing teachers to focus on differentiated instruction and link out-of-class practice more closely with curriculum goals.

Drawing on multiple data sources, findings showed that learners used the app for short, private speaking practice outside class, immediate audio feedback helped improve intelligibility, and teacher-mediated routines connected this practice with interactive classroom activities. The article outlines the co-design process between AMES Australia and Getmee, the curriculum alignment, and the implementation practices that supported equitable access for diverse learners.

The case suggests that AI can help make adult foundation skills training more inclusive and higher‑quality when it matches the curriculum, teachers guide its use, and learners are supported to get started.
